ABSU Professor suspended for claiming Keke riders earn more than lecturers

The management of Abia State University (ABSU) has suspended a lecturer, Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze, over a Facebook post in which he allegedly claimed that some professors at the institution earn less than commercial tricycle riders.

Nwaeze, a lecturer in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, reportedly made the claims on Facebook, where he discussed the earnings of university professors and commercial tricycle operators.

Professor compares lecturers’ salaries with Keke riders

In the social media post, Nwaeze alleged that some professors at ABSU earn less than ₦400,000 monthly.

He further claimed that some commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke, riders make more money each month than professors at the university.

The claims generated attention because of the contrast between the income of university professors and that of commercial transport operators.

ABSU suspends lecturer

Reacting to the post, the management of ABSU said the social media publications were “inimical to the interests of the institution.”

The suspension was contained in a statement released on Thursday, August 13, and signed by Chijioke Nwogu, the university’s Public Relations Officer/Deputy Registrar.

The university also announced that an investigative panel had been constituted to examine the matter.

The development means Professor Nwaeze will face an investigation over the Facebook posts and the claims contained in them.
