“Poor for what?” — Woman slams male claims of poverty, highlights patriarchal advantage in viral video

A woman has sparked widespread online debate after calling out men who claim economic hardship despite benefiting from structural advantages.

In a viral video, she criticized men for citing poverty as an excuse while enjoying privileges historically unavailable to women, such as inheritance, property, and societal power.

Patriarchy and male privilege in Nigeria

I dey class, I rush come make this video because of the first question: ‘Why does gender matter in NGO?’ My own simple answer was patriarchy. Women and children are at the receiving end of everything. You’re telling me that you are poor? Poor for what? How are you poor in the structure that you created for yourself?” she asked passionately.

She argued that capitalism is inherently designed for men, while women face systemic limitations, including workplace exploitation and penalties for maternity leave.

Historical inequality in education and wealth

She went further, highlighting historical inequalities: “The first man in Nigeria to go to school was in 1725. The first woman to go to school, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, died in the 1940s. You had 250 years head start before us. You had time to accumulate wealth before us. Yet you are telling me you are economically displaced? Shame on you!”

The video, has reignited conversations about patriarchy, gender inequality, and the systemic barriers women face in education, employment, and wealth accumulation.
