Pinnick rules out NFF presidency return

Former Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick has dismissed speculation about a possible return to the top office of Nigerian football, stating clearly that he has no intention of seeking the position again.

Rumours had circulated in recent weeks suggesting the former football administrator was positioning himself for a third term as NFF president. However, Pinnick has now publicly moved to shut down those claims.

Clear rejection of third-term speculation

Speaking in an interview with News Central, Pinnick was unambiguous about his stance, despite acknowledging that age is not a limiting factor.

“I’m young. I’m 55. I could still be president. But do I want to be? Never,” he said.

The comments effectively end talk of a comeback, at least for now, as the NFF continues to tackle leadership and governance challenges ahead of its next election cycle.

Eight years at the helm

Pinnick served two full terms as NFF president between 2014 and 2022, a period that included Nigeria’s return to major tournaments and several administrative reforms.

His tenure also coincided with increased international exposure for Nigerian football administrators.

Reflecting on his time in office, Pinnick expressed satisfaction with his contribution and signalled that he sees his chapter at the federation as closed. “I’ve been in the role for eight years and I’m happy with that,” he said.

Focus shifts to institutional progress

Beyond the NFF, Pinnick has remained active on the global football stage. He previously served as First Vice President of the Confederation of African Football and was a member of FIFA’s committee for organizing competitions, roles that expanded his influence beyond Nigeria.

According to Pinnick, stepping aside has allowed the federation to better assess its challenges and direction.

“So things are moving forward. It’s helping the federation to see some of its problems and how to fix them,” he added.
