“Petrol costs over ₦3,000 per litre in UK” – Okpebholo compares fuel prices, praises Tinubu’s administration

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has compared the cost of petrol in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, saying Nigerians are currently paying less for the product than motorists in the UK.

Okpebholo made the remark on Thursday while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State, where he urged Nigerians to be patient with ongoing economic reforms.

The governor recalled that he was in London the previous week and visited a filling station with a friend to compare petrol prices in the UK with what Nigerians pay at home.

“When we complained about the cost of petrol, I was in London last week. I told my friend, ‘Let’s go and buy fuel just to know the cost of fuel between Nigeria and England.’ Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about ₦3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” he stated.

Okpebholo noted that the comparison showed that petrol was still cheaper in Nigeria, despite ongoing complaints over the cost of fuel.

“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” the governor added.

His comment comes amid continued concerns over the cost of petrol and other essential commodities in Nigeria.

Earlier this month, fuel pump prices had reportedly reached about ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, and as high as ₦1,500 in the northern part of the country.

The governor also defended the Federal Government’s ongoing economic reforms, describing them as difficult but necessary and expressing confidence that they would eventually yield results.
