Peter Obi’s absence at WAFCON final helped Super Falcons win – Reno Omokri
Former presidential aide and political commentator Reno Omokri has stirred controversy once again, this time claiming that the Super Falcons’ historic victory in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final was partly due to the absence of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling WAFCON final on Saturday night, July 26, marking Nigeria’s return to glory after their last championship win in 2018.
Reacting to the win in a post shared on Sunday, July 27, via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Omokri suggested that Obi’s presence at major football events in the past has proven to be a distraction. He recalled the Super Eagles’ 1-1 home draw against Zimbabwe in March during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“Thank God Peter Obi did not attend the WAFCON final. That is how he would have distracted the Super Falcons, like he did to the Super Eagles during the World Cup qualifying match at Uyo,” Omokri wrote.
He further questioned Obi’s credibility as a sports supporter, accusing the former Anambra governor of showing sudden interest in football only after leaving office. He pointed out that Obi never built a stadium capable of hosting international matches during his time as governor.
“A man who could not build a World Class stadium capable of hosting a FIFA match in Anambra for eight years wanting to go to a stadium built by Godswill Akpabio when he was a Governor. If he really loved sports, why did he not show it when he was Governor?” he stated.
Omokri didn’t stop at sports. He also criticized Obi’s comments on educational policy, calling him inconsistent and unqualified to advise on matters such as the training of Dentistry students in Nigerian universities.
“A fellow who could not build even a nursery school in his two terms as Governor is now advising the Federal Government about Dentistry students at various universities. What a contradiction!” he added.
