Peter Obi recalls leaving business interests after becoming governor

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has recounted how he stepped away from his private business interests after assuming public office as Governor of Anambra State.

Speaking about his transition from business to politics, Obi said that one of his companies, Next International UK, had significant ongoing operations at the time he was declared governor, including an overdraft exceeding $7 million and more than 200 containers reportedly in transit.

According to Obi, he immediately informed his wife to take charge of the business affairs and proceeded to resign from 11 companies on the day he assumed office.

He said the decision was part of his effort to avoid conflicts of interest and focus fully on his responsibilities in government.

The former governor has frequently referenced his business background during public engagements, arguing that his private-sector experience helped shape his approach to governance, financial management, and public administration.
