Peseiro happy to end Super Eagles’ friendly drought

The Super Eagles victory shatters their five years winless run in international friendlies, having played a total of 15 games in those years.

Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro is delighted to have his team end their five-year friendly winless streak in a 3-2 victory over Mozambique.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a hard-fought victory over the Mambas of Mozambique at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira, on Monday.

The Nigerian team who scored all three of their goals in the first half of the match in Portugal, rallied to secure the win, after their opponent put two across.

After the game, Peseiro said, “I am happy because after 15 matches, we have finally won a game. We have not won a friendly game in the last five years. We have had eight defeats and seven draws, but today, the result was good.”

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles will now focus on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe scheduled for November.

Following that, they will be gearing up for their participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, to be hosted by Ivory Coast in January 2024.

Nigeria has been drawn into Group A for the tournament, alongside host nation Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.

The Super Eagles last won the African Cup of Nation in 2013, with the hope of completing their tally to four in the next year’s event.
