Pascal Dozie (April 9, 1939 – April 8, 2025) was a Nigerian businessman. He founded Diamond Bank and served as the chairman of Pan-Atlantic University. Dozie died on April 8, 2025, a day before his 86th birthday.

Pascal Gabriel Dozie was born on April 9, 1939, in the Egbu community of Owerri, Nigeria. He was born into the family of Charles Dozie, a Catholic catechist. From 1964 to 1968, Dozie attended Our Lady’s 1961 School Emekuku, where he received his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC).

He later attended Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary and Holy Ghost College in Owerri, where he completed his West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

After finishing high school, he went to London to study economics at the London School of Economics and earned a BSc in economics. He later attended City University in London, where he studied operational research and industrial engineering and earned a master’s degree in Administrative Science.

Career

Pascal Dozie began his work as an economist with the National Economic Development Office in the United Kingdom. He was also a part-time lecturer at North Western Polytechnic in London. Between 1970 and 1971, he worked as a consulting economist with the African States Consulting Organisation in Uganda.

In 1971, after leaving his employment in Uganda, he moved to Nigeria at his mother’s request. After returning to Nigeria in 1971, he founded his first company, the African Development Consulting Group (ADCG), using his knowledge in econometrics and industrial engineering.

ADCG has collaborated with firms including Nestlé and Pfizer. He was later engaged by Clement Isong, then Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, to undertake some studies on the Cooperative and Commerce Bank.

He was named Chairman of Progress Bank in 1985, which has since gone out of business. Later that year, Dozie sought a banking licence to assist traders in South-Eastern Nigeria who were experiencing banking issues. This resulted in the establishment of Diamond Bank.

At its establishment, the bank’s share capital was ₦10 million ($28,000), with only 21 stockholders. In 1990, he met the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirements for operating a conventional bank, and in 1991, Diamond Bank began operations.

He was CEO of Diamond Bank from 1991 to 2006, when he passed over to his son, Uzoma Dozie. He was the inaugural president of the Lagos Business School Alumni Association.

Dozie previously served as President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. He owned interests in MTN Group and served as its chairman. He then resigned as chairman and was succeeded by Ernest Ndukwe, the previous NCC leader.

Pascal Dozie died on April 8, 2025, at the age of 85. His family recalled him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and obedient servant of God.
