Otele nets first Bundesliga goal in Hamburg loss to Dortmund

Philip Otele marked a personal milestone by scoring his first Bundesliga goal, but it was not enough to prevent Hamburger SV from falling to a 3-2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

The Nigerian winger, recently called up to the national team, gave his side an early advantage with a finish in the 19th minute, beating Gregor Kobel to underline his growing impact since arriving on loan from Basel.

Bright start for Hamburg

Otele’s opener set things up for a strong first-half display from Hamburg, who looked in control for large periods.

The visitors doubled their lead before the break through Albert Sambi Lokonga, putting pressure on Dortmund heading into the interval.

The goal highlighted Otele’s rapid adaptation to German football, with the 26-year-old emerging as a key attacking force. His performance comes shortly after his maiden invitation to the Super Eagles for upcoming friendlies.

Dortmund stage comeback

The game shifted after the restart as Dortmund responded strongly. Ramy Bensebaini reduced the deficit from the penalty spot following a VAR decision.

The hosts then levelled through Serhou Guirassy, who reacted quickest to a rebound inside the box.

Dortmund completed the turnaround late in the match, with Bensebaini converting a second penalty to seal all three points.

Despite the defeat, Otele’s goal stood out as a key takeaway, marking a significant step in his development.

With international recognition now following his club performances, the winger is expected to play a growing role for both Hamburg and Eric Chelle’s team in the coming fixtures.
