Osimhen admits his Juventus move was blocked by Napoli president

Victor Osimhen has confirmed he came close to joining Juventus before sealing a permanent transfer to Galatasaray, ahead of their UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off meeting.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport before the first leg in Istanbul, the Nigeria international disclosed that Juventus made an approach during his time at Napoli.

“I could have joined Juventus, yes. Juve wanted to sign me but Napoli president De Laurentiis didn’t want to sell me to Juventus,” Osimhen said. “For sure, Juventus are a top club. When Juventus call you, you listen.”

Strong form in Istanbul

Osimhen completed his permanent switch to Galatasaray last summer following a successful loan spell. He has maintained his scoring form, registering 15 goals and three assists in 22 appearances this season.

His influence has extended into Europe. The 27-year-old has scored six goals in six Champions League matches and is closing in on the club’s single-season record of eight goals in the competition.

“I am at a club and city I absolutely love. I’ve been lucky to find Galatasaray on my way. There’s nothing similar to Gala and the love from the fans,” he added.

Focus on European progress

Osimhen helped Galatasaray secure the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup titles in his first campaign. Attention has now shifted to continental ambitions.

“We did great in Turkey. Now it’s time to show our quality in Europe,” he said.

Galatasaray host Juventus at RAMS Park in the first leg, with the return fixture scheduled in Turin next week.

The tie presents Osimhen with an immediate opportunity to face the club he once nearly joined, with a place in the round of 16 at stake.
