Onyeka joins Frank Lampard’s Coventry City on promotion-linked loan

Coventry City have confirmed the signing of Nigeria international Frank Onyeka on loan from Premier League side Brentford, with the deal tied to the club’s promotion ambitions.

The Sky Blues announced on Monday evening that the 28-year-old midfielder has joined for the remainder of the season, with an obligation to make the move permanent should Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League.

Onyeka arrives at the CBS Arena after nearly four years with Brentford, where he established himself as a reliable presence in midfield and gained extensive top-flight experience in England.

Premier League experience added

Since joining Brentford in the summer of 2021, Onyeka made 87 appearances across all competitions, including 75 in the Premier League.

He was part of the squad that helped the Bees consolidate their place in the top flight and achieve a ninth-place finish in the 2022/23 season, their highest league position since promotion.

His arrival gives Coventry a midfielder with proven experience at the highest level as they push to return to the Premier League.

Known for his energy, ball-winning ability and tactical discipline, Onyeka is expected to add steel and depth to the Sky Blues’ midfield options during the decisive phase of the campaign.

Career built across Europe

Before moving to England, Onyeka played in Denmark with Midtjylland, where he enjoyed a successful spell as well.

He won two Danish Superliga titles, lifted the Danish Cup in the 2018/19 season and featured in both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, gaining valuable European experience.

Last season, the midfielder continued his development with a loan move to Bundesliga side Augsburg, making 31 appearances in Germany’s top division and further broadening his exposure to elite-level football.

On the international stage, Onyeka has earned 41 caps for Nigeria and was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the team finished third.

Onyeka targets promotion push

After completing the move, Onyeka expressed his determination to help Coventry achieve their objective.

“I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “I’m a strong midfielder, I’m a winner and I always want to fight for my teammates. My aim is to give 100 per cent, bring my experience and help the team get promoted to the Premier League and bring glory to the city again.”

He added: “I’m very excited to get going and I’m ready to give my all for Coventry.”

Onyeka will work under head coach Frank Lampard, as Coventry look to convert their promotion push into a return to the Premier League.
