Onyeka debut lifts Coventry to Championship summit

Frank Onyeka made an immediate impact on his first appearance for Coventry City, helping the Sky Blues secure a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough at the CBS Arena on Monday night.
The Nigerian midfielder, who arrived on loan from Brentford F.C. in January, was handed his debut by head coach Frank Lampard.
He played 75 minutes as Coventry returned to winning ways after a three-match winless run.
Wright hat-trick secures points
Coventry opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Haji Wright, who converted from close range to give the hosts an early advantage.

Onyeka was booked six minutes later for a midfield challenge but maintained control in his defensive duties.
Wright doubled the lead in the 55th minute, finishing confidently to strengthen Coventry’s position. However, Middlesbrough responded in the 67th minute when Riley McGree pulled one back, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.
Those hopes were short-lived. A handball by Matt Targett conceded a penalty, and Wright completed his hat-trick from the spot to restore the two-goal cushion.
Strong midfield presence
Onyeka’s performance in central midfield drew positive reaction from home supporters. The 28-year-old provided defensive cover, broke up play effectively, and was the most fouled player on the pitch, winning five free kicks before being substituted to a standing ovation.
The result lifts Coventry to the top of the Championship table on 62 points, one ahead of Middlesbrough, who drop to second following the defeat.
Coventry next travel to face West Bromwich Albion F.C., while Middlesbrough will host Oxford United F.C. as the promotion race continues.
