Onuachu takes season’s tally to 17 in Trabzonspor win over Gaziantep
Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu scored for a sixth consecutive match as his side came from behind to defeat Gaziantep 2-1 in Sunday’s Super Lig clash.
The Nigerian forward struck the decisive goal in the first half to maintain his prolific run and keep Trabzonspor within touching distance of the top of the table.
Swift turnaround
Gaziantep opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through Mohamed Bayo after capitalising on early pressure.
However, the visitors responded quickly. Felipe Augusto restored parity just two minutes later, finishing off a fast attacking move to level the contest at 1-1.
Trabzonspor completed the comeback in the 27th minute when Onuachu reacted fastest inside the penalty area to convert from close range.
The goal was his 35th for the club, moving him into fifth place among Trabzonspor’s highest-scoring foreign players.
Neither side added to the scoreline after the break. Gaziantep pushed for an equaliser but failed to convert their chances, while Trabzonspor managed the game effectively to secure all three points.
Title race implications
The result keeps Trabzonspor third in the Super Lig standings on 48 points.
They remain four points behind second-placed Fenerbahce and seven adrift of leaders Galatasaray.
Gaziantep stay ninth following their ninth league defeat of the season.
Onuachu’s latest strike takes his tally to 17 league goals and 18 in all competitions this campaign.
The 31-year-old currently leads the Super Lig scoring chart and is enjoying one of the most productive spells of his career as Trabzonspor continue their pursuit of the leading pack.
