Onuachu makes Turkish history with double in Trabzonspor routing of Samsunspor

Paul Onuachu delivered a landmark performance after Trabzonspor secured a 3-0 away win over Samsunspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday.

The Super Eagles striker scored twice at the Samsun 19 Mayis Stadyumu to extend his prolific run this season and cement his place in Trabzonspor history.

His goals powered Fatih Tekke’s side past a Samsunspor team that had earned a reputation as one of the league’s most resilient opponents.

Trabzonspor took control early despite the hosts’ aggressive start, with Onuachu once again proving decisive in front of goal.

Onuachu strikes early

The visitors went ahead in the 23rd minute when Onuachu rose highest to meet a cross from Ernest Muçi.

The Nigerian forward’s header took a slight deflection off a defender before beating the goalkeeper to give Trabzonspor the lead.

Samsunspor attempted to respond with increased pressure, but Trabzonspor remained in control and continued to create the clearer chances.

Early in the second half, Onuachu thought he had doubled his tally after finding the net again in the 55th minute. However, the goal was ruled out following a VAR review that identified a foul in the build-up.

Record-setting second goal

Onuachu was not to be denied. In the 81st minute, he finished off a low cross from Umut Nayir to restore Trabzonspor’s two-goal cushion, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback for the hosts.

The striker was substituted shortly after his second goal, making way for Okay Yokuşlu. In stoppage time, Muçi converted a penalty to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

According to Opta Can, Onuachu has now become the first foreign player in Trabzonspor’s history to score in both league meetings against Samsunspor in the same Super Lig season.

The 29-year-old also leads the Super Lig scoring chart with 15 goals and boasts the best goal conversion rate among players with more than five league goals.

The result keeps Trabzonspor third in the table, four points behind leaders Galatasaray, who still have a game in hand.
