Okonjo-Iweala commends Tinubu for stabilizing Nigeria’s economy

Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has commended President Bola Tinubu for what she described as the stabilisation of Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking to State House correspondents after a meeting with the President in Abuja on Thursday, Okonjo-Iweala said the Tinubu administration had made significant progress in ensuring economic stability, a key prerequisite for future growth.

“We think that the President and his team have worked hard to stabilise the economy and you cannot improve an economy unless it’s stable, so he has to be given the credit for the stability of the economy,” she said.

The WTO chief, however, stressed that the next priority should be driving economic growth while cushioning the effects of recent reforms on ordinary Nigerians.

“The reforms have been in the right direction. What is needed next is growth. We now need to grow the economy and put in a social safety net, so that people who are feeling the pinch of the reforms can also have some support to weather the hardship,” she stated.

Okonjo-Iweala explained that discussions with the President centred on ways to establish safety nets to protect vulnerable Nigerians, boost job creation, and put more money in people’s pockets.

“These are issues that we discussed with Mr. President,” she added.
