Okocha backs Osimhen, Lookman clash as sign of winning mentality

Super Eagles legend Jay-Jay Okocha has downplayed concerns over the on-field disagreement between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, insisting such moments can benefit the Nigerian team rather than harm it.

The incident occurred during Nigeria’s round-of-16 win over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a match in which both forwards were already on the scoresheet.

The brief flare-up, which unfolded midway through the second half, raised concerns among fans and v about unity within the Super Eagles camp.

What triggered the disagreement

Tensions rose in the 63rd minute after a promising attacking move broke down. Full-back Bruno Onyemaechi, positioned high up the pitch, opted to shoot instead of releasing Osimhen, who was unmarked on the right.

When the ball later fell to Lookman, the Atalanta winger chose to recycle possession rather than press the advantage.

Osimhen reacted angrily, reminding his teammate that “this is a team game,” to which Lookman responded that Osimhen had already scored twice.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi attempted to calm the Napoli striker, but Osimhen appeared unmoved and was substituted shortly after.

Okocha welcomes the passion

Speaking on the Clutch 9 Podcast, Okocha said such exchanges reflect ambition rather than division.

“These things happen, and I love to see that sometimes in a team,” Okocha said. “It shows they want to win. They’re not just there to play and go home.”

The AFCON 1994 winner acknowledged that Osimhen’s reaction crossed a line but stressed that the underlying emotion was positive.

“Osimhen went over the board, and that needs to be said. But it’s good to see players who are passionate and hungry. At the same time, you have to respect your teammate. If there’s an issue, sort it out in the dressing room, not in public.”

Focus shifts to Morocco

Nigeria have since moved on from the incident and remain firmly focused on their semi-final clash against hosts Morocco on Wednesday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
