OFFICIAL: Lookman completes Atletico Madrid move, thanks Atalanta fans

Ademola Lookman has officially completed a permanent transfer from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid, sealing a €40 million move on the January transfer deadline day.

The Nigeria international has signed a long-term contract with the La Liga side, ending his three-and-a-half-year stay in Bergamo and beginning a new chapter under Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

The transfer ranks among Atletico Madrid’s most significant acquisitions of the winter window, with the club moving decisively to bolster its attacking options.

Lookman arrives in Madrid after an outstanding spell in Italy, where he established himself as one of Serie A’s most effective forwards and a key figure in Atalanta’s rise on the European stage.

His performances in domestic and continental competitions made him one of the most sought-after African players in Europe.

Atletico secure proven winner

Atletico’s decision to invest heavily in Lookman reflects their intent to add pace, versatility and end product to their frontline.

The 27-year-old is capable of operating across the front three and is known for his direct running, pressing intensity and ability to deliver in high-pressure matches.

During his time at Atalanta, Lookman played a central role in the club’s historic Europa League triumph, scoring a hat-trick in the final to secure their first major trophy in 61 years.

That campaign further elevated his profile and reinforced his reputation as a big-game player.

His individual form was also recognised on the continental stage, as he won the 2024 African Player of the Year award while still an Atalanta player.

Farewell message to Atalanta supporters

Following the confirmation of his move, Lookman later took to social media to send a farewell message to Atalanta fans, reflecting on his time at the club.

“To the Atalanta family, after nearly four years, the time has come for me to say goodbye,” he wrote on Instagram.

“From the moment I arrived in Bergamo, you welcomed me like one of your own and pushed me to be the best version of myself.”

“Together, we made history. European champions, a night none of us will ever forget,” Lookman added.

“Scoring a hat-trick in a European final and lifting a trophy with this club after a 61 year trophy drought will stay with me.”

He also thanked the fans for their support, concluding: “Thank you for making Bergamo feel like home and for giving me memories I’ll carry forever. Grazie di tutto, ciao.”

Lookman now turns his focus to Atletico Madrid, where expectations will be high as he looks to replicate his Italian success in Spain.
