Odegbami confident Super Eagles will make World Cup
Legendary Nigerian winger Segun Odegbami has expressed confidence that the Super Eagles can make it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo.
The former Green Eagles star praised the squad’s performance, noting that their cohesion and attacking play deserved the decisive win.

Speaking about the match, Odegbami said the players showed determination and composure throughout, giving fans a reason to remain hopeful after a challenging qualifying campaign. “The team played very well, and I’m confident they have what it takes to advance,” he said.
The win has reignited optimism across Nigeria, with supporters now focusing on the upcoming play-offs, where the Eagles will face another second-placed African team for a spot in the expanded World Cup tournament.
Osimhen leads the charge in crucial victory
The match saw Victor Osimhen dominate the pitch, scoring a hat-trick that secured Nigeria’s place among the top four second-placed teams in Africa.
Frank Onyeka added a stoppage-time goal to seal the emphatic 4–0 triumph, highlighting the team’s attacking strength.
This result also ensured that Nigeria ended the qualifiers with 15 points and a +7 goal difference, avoiding the embarrassment of back-to-back World Cup absences for the first time since 1994.
Their performance demonstrates that the Eagles can compete at the highest level despite early campaign struggles.
Fans and football commentators alike have applauded the team’s attacking efficiency, signalling hope that Nigeria can maintain momentum heading into the play-off stage.
Focus shifts to play-offs and next steps
With the draw for the African play-offs imminent, attention now turns to which team Nigeria will face in a two-legged tie to secure a World Cup berth.
It’s been emphasised that the Eagles must remain focused and disciplined to navigate the high-pressure matches successfully.
Odegbami, a key figure in Nigeria’s 1980 AFCON triumph, believes the current squad possesses the talent and experience to overcome the challenge. He urged the team to sustain the same level of intensity and avoid complacency.
“This squad has shown it can rise to the occasion,” he said. “If they keep playing with confidence and determination, there’s no reason why Nigeria shouldn’t be at the World Cup next year.”
