Nwaiwu reflects on dream Super Eagles debut

Chibuike Nwaiwu has described his Super Eagles debut as a dream come true after featuring in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran in an international friendly.
The Trabzonspor centre-back was a late addition to the squad following the withdrawal of Calvin Bassey, and made his first appearance after replacing the injured Igoh Ogbu in the second half.
Late call-up, early opportunity
Nwaiwu was not originally expected to feature, but head coach Eric Chelle handed him a chance earlier than anticipated.
The 26-year-old admitted to early nerves after being introduced into a high-tempo contest but gradually settled into the game, contributing defensively as Nigeria held on for victory.

“It’s a privilege for me to represent my country; it is the dream of every footballer in the world,” he said.
“I am very happy to be here and to have made my debut today. Iran is a very good side that consistently qualifies for the World Cup, but we took our chances and did a great job.”
Journey shaped by belief
Nwaiwu also reflected on his rise from the Nigeria Professional Football League to the international stage, highlighting his determination to reach this level.
“I believe in God and I believe hard work pays off. Ever since my time in the NPFL, I always told myself I would wear the national team shirt,” he said.
“When I received the message at my club, I was so excited that I nearly missed my flight! Seeing the news and my club’s announcement was a truly great moment.”
Opportunity ahead
With Ogbu’s injury status uncertain, Nwaiwu could now be in contention for a starting role in Nigeria’s next friendly against Jordan.
His debut performance, while not without initial hesitation, demonstrated composure and adaptability, qualities that could see him retain a place in the squad as Chelle continues to assess defensive options.
