Nwabali confident of Super Eagles’ 2025 AFCON success

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has expressed confidence that Nigeria can win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Chippa United shot-stopper said Nigerians expect nothing short of victory, stressing that the team’s goal is not merely to participate but to bring the trophy home.

The 2025 AFCON is scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Nwabali, who rose to prominence after his stellar performance at the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast, believes that last year’s experience has equipped the squad with stronger resolve.

AFCON is one of the biggest tournaments in the world. As a big nation, we are always expected to win,” he said.

Lessons from Ivory Coast final

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 2–1 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast in the 2023 final, Nwabali noted that the loss taught the team valuable lessons.

Playing the final last year, I feel this year we are going to win it,” he stated confidently.

The goalkeeper’s efforts during the last tournament earned him recognition as the Super Eagles’ number one choice, reviving hopes of Nigeria’s return to continental glory.

The Super Eagles have lifted the AFCON trophy three times. First in 1980, then 1994, and 2013 under late coach Stephen Keshi.

The 2025 edition presents an opportunity to end a 12-year title drought.

World Cup playoffs and team competition

Despite his growing reputation, Nwabali has faced criticism for time-wasting and costly errors during recent World Cup qualifiers.

He, however, remains integral as Nigeria prepares for the African playoffs next week.

The qualifiers serve as a crucial test ahead of AFCON, with the World Cup set for the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

As coach Eric Chelle releases his squad list, Nwabali is expected to face competition from Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who returns to the team.
