“No water, no light to deliver a baby” – Nurses lament alleged conditions at Uwani General hospital

Nurses at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu have raised serious alarm over the poor conditions at the facility, describing the environment as unsafe for both patients and healthcare workers.
In a distressing video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the nurses revealed that the hospital lacks basic necessities such as water, electricity, and oxygen, making it extremely difficult to handle critical medical situations.
In their words:
“There’s no water, there’s no light, mosquitoes everywhere. I don’t know what the government is doing about it. There’s a woman in labour right now and there’s no light. What if complications arise? What do we do?
What if the baby needs an incubator? This is a general hospital, yet the conditions are so bad. There’s no oxygen, no light to even give birth to a child. Our neighbours have light, but a whole general hospital doesn’t have electricity.”
The healthcare workers said they are overwhelmed and frustrated, calling on the government to urgently intervene and repair the failing infrastructure.
They also referenced a house beside the hospital that has electricity, highlighting how unacceptable it is for a government facility meant to save lives to lack basic power supply.
Many Nigerians have expressed anger online, deeming it unacceptable for a government hospital to operate under such conditions, while others are demanding immediate action from authorities.
