No extension talks yet for Chelle – NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that there are no ongoing discussions regarding a contract extension for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle following the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Chelle, who was appointed in January 2025, is midway through his current contract, and the federation insists there is no urgency to revisit his deal at this stage.

NFF clarifies Chelle’s contract status

Speaking with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau stated clearly that any talk of a renewal is premature.

“For now, there’ll be no contract extension discussion with Chelle,” Gusau said. “We signed a two-year contract with him in January 2025 and he’s still only halfway through his contract.”

The clarification comes amid speculation following Nigeria’s strong showing at the AFCON tournament, where the Super Eagles finished third.

AFCON bronze not trigger for review

Chelle guided Nigeria to a bronze-medal finish after a playoff victory over Egypt, a result that restored some confidence around the national team after recent inconsistencies.

However, the NFF has made it clear that tournament performance alone will not prompt immediate contract negotiations.

The federation’s position suggests a preference for stability and adherence to existing contractual terms rather than reactive decision-making.

Focus remains on long-term objectives

With Chelle still having roughly a year left on his deal, the NFF appears focused on continuity as Nigeria looks ahead to future qualifiers and the next AFCON cycle.

Any formal review of the coach’s future is expected to come closer to the end of his contract, not in the immediate aftermath of the tournament.
