Nigerian Army Reports Cyber Breach as Second Military X Account Is Hit in Two Weeks

The Nigerian Army claims its official X account was the target of a “attempted” unauthorized hack on Saturday.

We noticed that about 3:50pm, the army account began posting memecoin updates.

Appolonia Anele, acting director of army public relations, said the event is being investigated as a cybersecurity compromise.

“The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorized access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account,” she stated in a Facebook post.

Anele stated that urgent technological and preventive procedures were implemented “to secure the account, prevent further unauthorized access, and safeguard the integrity of information disseminated through the platform”.

“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” she stated.

The army encouraged the public to be cautious and reject “any suspicious, unauthorized, misleading, or unverified content” coming from the X account.

The army also requested the public and media to verify facts through its other official communication channels until the matter was fully resolved.

It is unclear whether the army has restored control of the X account. The page’s last post was published prior to the breach.

The news comes around two weeks after the Defense Headquarters (DHQ) announced that its official X account had been hijacked in a cyberattack.

In a statement issued on August 15, Samaila Uba, director of defense information, stated that the DHQ had taken proper technical measures to safeguard the account and prevent further unauthorized access.
