“Nigeria had 7.7 million births in 2025 — yet we’re still not serious about birth control,” lady sparks debate

A woman has stirred widespread discussion on social media after raising concerns about the country’s rising population despite worsening economic conditions.

Her comment, posted in a viral video on Tuesday, questioned why family planning is not taken more seriously even as millions of children are born annually across the country.

Viral comment highlights population pressure

In the video, the woman expressed worry over the number of babies born in Nigeria each year, arguing that the country’s economic realities do not match its population growth.

She said many families are struggling to feed and educate children, yet birth rates remain high.

“7.7 million, that’s how many children were born in Nigeria in 2025. That’s over 16,000 births every single day, more than the entire Europe. Yet with rising hunger, poverty, unemployment and insecurity, it’s clear Nigeria still isn’t taking birth control seriously. We keep bringing children into a system that cannot properly take care of the ones already here. Until we begin to talk honestly about family planning, nothing will change.”

Experts have long warned about rapid population growth

Her remarks echo repeated warnings from organisations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund, which has previously reported that Nigeria records one of the highest numbers of births globally each year.

According to available demographic estimates, at least seven million babies are born in Nigeria annually, contributing to sustained population growth.

The debate is not new. Similar concerns were raised in 2021 when health advocates called for stronger investment in reproductive health services and wider access to contraceptives, noting that population growth could outpace economic development if not properly managed.
