Nigeria dismiss claims Chelle set for Morocco job

Reports linking Eric Chelle with the vacant Morocco national football team coaching role have been dismissed by Super Eagles‘ media officer.

Nigeria Football Federation officials moved to quash the speculation after suggestions the Super Eagles coach could leave his post to take charge of the Atlas Lions.

Media officer rejects speculation

Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe described the reports as “fake”, according to Soccernet, confirming Chelle remains head coach of the Nigeria national football team.

The rumours emerged after Morocco parted ways with manager Walid Regragui last week as they begin the search for a new coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco are aiming to build on their historic semi-final appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Speculation follows AFCON campaign

Chelle has been the subject of growing interest since guiding Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite the podium finish, sections of supporters and pundits argued the squad possessed the quality to challenge for the title.

The former Mali national football team coach has also been linked with several vacancies across Africa in recent months, including roles in Algeria, Tunisia and Angola.

He was additionally mentioned as a possible candidate at Olympique de Marseille following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi earlier this year.

Contract uncertainty remains

While the Morocco speculation has been dismissed, uncertainty remains over Chelle’s long-term future in Nigeria.

The coach is entering the final year of his contract, with negotiations over an extension yet to reach a breakthrough.

Chelle recently confirmed that a leaked list detailing his contract demands was accurate, though it remains unclear whether the Nigeria Football Federation has moved closer to meeting those terms.
