NFF reportedly owes Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle three months’ salary

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly behind on salary payments to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, with sources indicating the Franco-Malian tactician is owed up to three months’ wages.

Chelle, appointed in January to rescue Nigeria’s troubled 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, steadied the team and secured a play-off berth after the chaos under Jose Peseiro and Finidi George.

However, the Super Eagles ultimately missed out on qualification after a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo.

Chelle unmoved by sack speculation

Despite the setback, Chelle has maintained a composed stance regarding his future. Speaking to Shina Oludare, he said he remains confident in the work he delivered.

“I did well. I worked and I will work. I tried to be at my best. We gave our best, the players, the coaching officials, everyone,” he said. “If anything happens, it won’t be the first.”

The NFF has not signaled any intention to dismiss the 48-year-old.

Salary arrears mirror longstanding NFF issues

Reports suggest the coach earns around $55,000 monthly, but he chose not to press the federation for payment even when players boycotted training in Morocco over unpaid bonuses before the Gabon clash.

The situation has now become a persistent problem within the NFF, including delayed payments to former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr ahead of the 2019 AFCON and repeated disputes involving ex-Super Falcons boss Randy Waldrum.

Payment plans reportedly underway

According to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, steps are being taken to clear the arrears owed to Chelle. The federation is said to be working toward resolving the issue ahead of AFCON 2025, as the team aims to avoid further distractions and maintain full focus on preparations.
