NFF mourns Ndidi’s father after fatal accident

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mr.Sunday Ndidi, father of Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, who died in a road accident.

The federation confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, describing the incident as shocking and painful, especially given the timing in relation to the midfielder’s recent international exploits.

According to information obtained by thenff.com, Mr. Sunday Ndidi died after being struck by a vehicle in Umunede, near Agbor, in Delta State.

NFF reacts to tragic loss

Reacting on behalf of the federation, NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi said the football body was still coming to terms with the news, noting that Ndidi had only recently given his all for the country at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“This is very sad,” Sanusi said. “The player just gave his very best to the nation at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco where we finished with the bronze medals.”

Sanusi added that the tragedy has cast a shadow over what had been a positive period for both the player and the national team.

Prayers and support for Ndidi

The NFF also highlighted Ndidi’s mindset going into the new phase of the season, stressing that he had returned to club football with renewed ambition before the family tragedy struck.

“He had returned to Turkey with great motivation and high hopes of helping his club to win silverware this season, and also help the Super Eagles reach new heights this year,” Sanusi said.

“We are really shocked at the moment and cannot say much, but we earnestly pray for the repose of the soul of Mr. Sunday Ndidi and pray that the Almighty God will comfort our team captain, his siblings, relations and indeed all those he has left behind.”

A difficult moment for Super Eagles captain

Ndidi, who was recently named Super Eagles captain in December, has been a central figure for both club and country.

His leadership showed at the AFCON tournament, where Nigeria finished third and claimed a bronze medal.

The midfielder’s performances in Morocco were widely praised, with Nigeria recording one of the best defensive records at the competition.

His influence has continued at club level in Turkey, where he has been an important presence since his move last summer.
