NFF clarifies Boniface ‘retirement’ post, South Africa’s eligibility controversy

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has addressed two pressing issues surrounding the Super Eagles, Victor Boniface’s viral social media post hinting at retirement and the controversy over South Africa’s alleged use of an ineligible player in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Boniface, 24, sparked debate after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in Moscow by posting a message that hinted his retirement from the Super Eagles.

His post read, “I don hang boot,” The now-deleted post triggered speculation among fans, particularly amid criticism of his performance.

However, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire dismissed the message as unserious.

“You should have noticed that he was jesting. He immediately deleted the post,” Olajire told said.

The NFF also responded to growing calls for action against South Africa, following claims that midfielder Teboho Mokoena played against Lesotho despite being suspended after accumulating two yellow cards in earlier matches.

This has prompted demands for FIFA to deduct points from Bafana Bafana.

Olajire clarified the federation’s position: “We have not [received any update]. That is up to FIFA. But the rule is the rule,” he added.

In a separate development, Olajire denied reports suggesting head coach Eric Chelle requested a change of venue for Nigeria’s upcoming home fixtures away from Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

“I cannot speak on any change of venue,” he stated.

The Super Eagles currently sit fourth in Group C of the African qualifiers, behind South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin Republic, with mounting pressure on the team’s qualification prospects for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
