Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona: Late penalty denies Magpies famous Champions League win

Newcastle United were forced to settle for a dramatic 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

Harvey Barnes appeared to have secured a famous victory for the hosts with a late goal, but a stoppage-time penalty converted by Lamine Yamal rescued Barcelona at the death.

Newcastle start brightly but fail to capitalise

Eddie Howe’s side began the match on the front foot and nearly found an early breakthrough when Sandro Tonali saw his header cleared off the line by Gerard Martín after goalkeeper Joan García spilled the ball.

Despite their strong start, clear chances were limited. At the other end, Fermín López forced a save from Aaron Ramsdale after finding space in the penalty area.

The second half followed a similar pattern as Newcastle struggled to convert promising positions into clear opportunities.

Anthony Elanga and Will Osula both failed to test García after breaking in behind Barcelona’s defence.

Barcelona also had chances to score, with Robert Lewandowski firing wide after being picked out by Raphinha inside the box.

Newcastle thought they had taken the lead earlier when Joelinton turned the ball into the net following Barnes’ effort that struck the post, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough finally came in the 86th minute. Jacob Murphy delivered a cross into the box and Barnes volleyed home from close range to send St James’ Park into celebration.

Late drama rescues Barcelona

Newcastle’s hopes of a memorable victory were shattered in stoppage time.

Defender Malick Thiaw tripped Dani Olmo in the penalty area, giving Barcelona a last-gasp opportunity.

Yamal stepped up and calmly sent Ramsdale the wrong way from the spot with the final kick of the game, ensuring the tie remains finely balanced heading into the second leg in Spain.
