Ned Nwoko reacts as man who claimed he offered N5 million to kill Regina Daniels apologises

Billionaire Senator, Ned Nwoko, has responded to the recent apology issued by a young man who falsely claimed that the lawmaker paid him and others N5 million each to kill his estranged wife, actress Regina Daniels.

The allegation surfaced a few days ago after a video circulated online showing a young man accusing Nwoko of sponsoring a plot to murder the actress. The video quickly gained traction across social media platforms, prompting widespread reactions.

Young Man Withdraws Claim After Nwoko Threatens Legal Action

Following the viral video, Senator Nwoko threatened legal action against those involved. Shortly after, the young man behind the allegation released an apology video, stating that his earlier claim was fabricated and created solely “as content.”

His retraction, however, did not stop the senator from issuing a detailed response addressing the wider issue of misinformation and unregulated online behaviour in Nigeria.

“Nigerian Social Media Space Has Become Unregulated” — Nwoko

In a lengthy letter reacting to the apology, Senator Ned Nwoko described the incident as a reflection of the growing dangers of unregulated content on social media.

He wrote: “The accompanying video, trended a couple of days ago. It is testament to the fact that Nigerian social media space has become one of the most unregulated in the world.”

According to him, making severe allegations to attract views has now become a trend with little regard for the damage such actions cause.

“Laying very serious allegations have become a common trait to attract millions of views without recourse to the damaging effects on the people involved.”

He added that many content creators exploit the emotions of Nigerians because they believe they can evade consequences.

“Knowing that there could be evasion of consequences because they can easily prey on the emotions of Nigerians encourages this deviant behaviour.”

Senator Nwoko Calls for Urgent Passage of Social Media Bill

Nwoko noted that the incident further validates the need for the social media regulation bill currently before the National Assembly.

“This case and many others has now clearly justified the urgent need for the social media bill in the national assembly. You can’t lie to make money and turn around to apologize after criminally defaming and hurting people.”

He called for a system where social media companies will be legally required to open offices in Nigeria and take responsibility for content published on their platforms.

“It is time for social media companies to be mandated to open offices in Nigeria and to take responsibility for what they allow on their platforms.”

The senator argued that if landlords can be held accountable for the actions of tenants involved in internet fraud, then social media companies should also be held responsible for hosting defamatory or harmful content.

“Why Make Exceptions for Foreign Companies?”

Nwoko questioned why local media organisations adhere to defamation laws while foreign digital platforms operate without similar accountability.

“All our local media houses comply with laws concerning defamation. Why make an exception for foreign companies who don’t pay taxes and ultimately avoid all manner of liabilities because of the absence of regulations.”

He warned that without proper regulations, online harm would continue unchecked.

“We must effectively be able to apply regulations or there is no end to this. It’s Senator Ned today, who knows who is next?”

Benefits of the Proposed Regulation

The senator urged Nigerians to support his bill, which seeks to ensure that social media companies register and operate within the country.

He listed the expected benefits, including:

Employment opportunities for Nigerians

Technology transfer

Payment of taxes by global tech companies

Cheaper and easier litigation

Improved tracking of bandits and criminal activities

Local storage of national data

He concluded: “Please support my bill on the regulation of social media companies which simply seeks to get them to register in Nigeria and open their offices here.”
