Ndidi warns Super Eagles against ‘underrating’ AFCON opponents

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has cautioned Nigeria against complacency as they prepare to face Tanzania in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, stressing that every team at the tournament deserves respect.

Nigeria head into the Group C encounter as favourites, having avoided defeat in seven previous meetings with the Taifa Stars.

However, Ndidi insists historical records count for little at a competition known for surprises.

AFCON’s unpredictability shapes Nigeria’s mindset

Ndidi underlined that qualification alone is evidence of quality, noting that AFCON regularly punishes teams that underestimate opponents.

The Besiktas midfielder made it clear that Nigeria’s objective in Morocco goes beyond participation.

“Every country that has qualified for the AFCON will not be underrated,” Ndidi said at the pre-match press conference.

“They are capable of also competing for the trophy, but we as Nigerians, we have come to contend. We are not just here to compete, we are here to contend.”

Leadership responsibility and internal motivation

The Tanzania match marks Ndidi’s first major tournament outing as Super Eagles captain.

He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the role, drawing motivation from both the squad and expectations back home.

“To be honest, inspiration comes from the team and from Nigerians, what we’ve gone through before and what we are expecting now,” he said.

“So the inspiration is what we have at hand and what we are going to do. We just focus on this AFCON and we’ll see what is next.”

Message to fans and focus on the task ahead

Nigeria are expected to enjoy significant backing in Morocco, with supporters travelling from home and members of the Nigerian student community set to attend.

Ndidi urged fans to embrace the occasion while backing the team’s focus. “The only thing I have to say is for them to come, enjoy the game and just have fun with it, because it is going to be an interesting game,” he said.

“The guys are ready, we are really focused on this game, which is the most important because it is the game at hand.”
