Ndidi sustains ankle injury before Besiktas’ Europa League qualifier

Besiktas midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has sustained an ankle ligament injury ahead of the club’s UEFA Europa League second qualifying round clash against Danish side Midtjylland.

The Turkish club confirmed the setback in an official statement on Tuesday after the Nigeria international underwent medical examinations at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital.

An MRI scan revealed ligament damage in Ndidi’s ankle, with the 28-year-old already beginning treatment under the supervision of Besiktas’ medical team.

Besiktas confirm injury

In a statement released on the club’s official website, Besiktas disclosed the outcome of the scan but did not provide a timeline for the midfielder’s recovery.

“Following an ankle injury, our player Wilfred Ndidi underwent an MRI at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital, which revealed a ligament injury in his ankle. Treatment for the player has been started by our medical team.”

The injury is a blow for head coach Vincenzo Italiano as Besiktas prepare for their Europa League qualifying fixture against Midtjylland.

Ndidi joined the Istanbul club last summer after leaving Leicester City and quickly became a key figure in midfield.

The Super Eagles captain impressed throughout last season with his defensive consistency, ball-winning ability and leadership, establishing himself as one of Besiktas’ most influential players.

His latest setback also comes amid continued speculation over his future. Reports have linked the Nigerian with a possible move to Saudi Arabia during the current transfer window, while Besiktas are believed to be open to suitable offers as they seek to strengthen the club’s financial position.
