Ndidi gesture goes viral as Super Eagles storm last eight

A pre-match act of kindness by Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has drawn widespread praise after a photo of him shielding a young mascot from heavy rain went viral during Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations round-of-16 clash against Mozambique.

The incident occurred moments before kick-off at the Fez Stadium in Morocco on Monday, as players lined up for the national anthems.

A sudden downpour hit the stadium, and Ndidi was seen using his captain’s flag and hands to protect the child standing in front of him while the ceremony continued.

The image quickly circulated across social media platforms, where fans described the gesture as a reflection of Ndidi’s leadership and character, particularly given the pressure surrounding a knockout fixture.

Fans praise captain’s leadership

Supporters on X and Instagram hailed the midfielder’s conduct, with many pointing to it as an example of leadership beyond the pitch.

One fan wrote on X: “That’s captain energy right there. Ndidi leading by example, and the squad proved it on the pitch. 4-0 demolition of Mozambique! Leadership no be just talk, na action.”

Social media influencer Serah Ibrahim also reacted, saying: “Wilfred Ndidi protecting his little player escort from the heavy rain before kick-off. Such a man, such a leader. Nigeria men.”

Ndidi was recently appointed Super Eagles captain for the 2025 AFCON tournament and has been a central figure in Nigeria’s midfield throughout the competition.

Super Eagles deliver on the pitch

Moments after the viral scene, Nigeria backed up their captain’s showing with a dominant 4-0 victory over Mozambique to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Victor Osimhen scored twice, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams added a goal each as the Super Eagles dominated the encounter.

Ndidi anchored the midfield effectively before being withdrawn after 82 minutes, with Raphael Onyedika introduced as head coach Eric Chelle managed his squad.

Nigeria’s win keeps their push for a fourth AFCON title on track. The Super Eagles will now face the winner of the round-of-16 tie between Algeria and DR Congo in the quarter-finals.
