Naira to Dollar official & black market rates today, Wednesday, December 17, 2025

The Naira exchange rate against dollar showed mixed movement across Nigeria’s foreign exchange markets on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, reflecting sustained pressure as year-end demand intensified.

The Naira exchange rate remained under close watch as data from official and unofficial markets highlighted a narrow but persistent gap, raising concerns among businesses and travellers.

Official market records mild depreciation

At the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, the Naira exchange rate opened slightly weaker compared with the previous trading session.

Available trading data showed the US Dollar exchanging at an average of ₦1,453.67, marking a modest depreciation for the local currency.

The Naira exchange rate experienced early volatility, touching a daily high of ₦1,454.97 during morning trading activities.

Analysts linked the movement in the Naira exchange rate to increased dollar demand from firms settling import bills and end-of-year obligations.

Parallel market maintains higher premium

In the parallel market, the Naira exchange rate remained higher than levels seen at the official trading window.

Street traders in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano were buying the Dollar at about ₦1,475 and selling around ₦1,485.

Although the spread stayed relatively stable compared with last week, the Naira exchange rate gap continued to affect small importers and individual travellers.

CBN intervention supports market stability

The Central Bank of Nigeria has sustained its policy of providing liquidity to stabilise the Naira exchange rate within the official market.

Market sources said recent interventions helped prevent sharper depreciation despite global oil price swings impacting foreign reserves.

Other major currencies

Beyond the Dollar, the Naira exchange rate against other major currencies also remained under pressure.

The British Pound traded near ₦1,943 at the official window, while the Euro exchanged at about ₦1,707.

In the parallel market, traders quoted higher figures, with the Pound approaching the ₦2,000 mark in some locations.
