N189bn scandal: “I shall not be intimidated” – Tambuwal roars back at EFCC after overnight detention

Former Sokoto State governor and current Senator for Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said he will not be silenced by what he termed “intimidation and blackmail” following his interrogation and detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Speaking to the crowd at his residence, the former governor pledged to continue championing “equitable and democratic governance” in the state.
“I cannot be intimidated or blackmailed. I believe I shall be vindicated, and victory shall be ours,” he said, drawing loud cheers from the gathering.
The EFCC confirmed it is investigating the senator over alleged financial misconduct during his time in office.
However, the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the probe as a politically motivated move aimed at weakening opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Recounting his experience, Tambuwal said he honoured the EFCC’s invitation on August 6 but was refused release on personal recognition despite his status as a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, two-term governor, and serving senator.
“They insisted I must present two top civil servants as sureties. My request was turned down. Despite being accompanied by three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, I was remanded in Cell N23,” he revealed.
He also accused the Sokoto State government of initiating a “Kangaroo investigative committee” against him, stressing that no competent authority had found him guilty of any wrongdoing.
