“My teammates helped me a lot” – Onuachu reacts after matching Trabzonspor’s 14-year record

Paul Onuachu has expressed satisfaction after scoring his 20th league goal of the season in Trabzonspor’s 3-1 win over Kayserispor on Monday.

The Super Eagles striker delivered a standout performance at the Kadir Has Stadium, scoring twice in first-half stoppage time to put his side firmly in control.

The goals helped Trabzonspor cruise to victory and earned the Nigerian forward the Man of the Match award.

Trabzonspor tighten grip on third place

The result lifted Trabzonspor to 54 points, strengthening their hold on third place in the Süper Lig standings.

They remain seven points behind leaders Galatasaray and three points adrift of second-placed Fenerbahçe as the title race intensifies.

On a personal level, Onuachu’s brace took his tally to 20 goals in the league this season, extending his lead at the top of the scoring chart.

The 31-year-old now sits four goals ahead of closest challenger Eldor Shomurodov.

Nigerian striker equals club scoring record

The goals also saw Onuachu match a long-standing scoring streak record previously set by Burak Yılmaz at Trabzonspor.

Equalling the feat points to the Nigerian forward’s influence since arriving at the Black Sea club.

Reacting after the match, Onuachu admitted he was pleased to reach the milestone but stressed he couldn’t have reached the height without the help of his teammates.

“I can say I’m happy. Since I arrived, people have been asking me, ‘How many goals are you going to score?’ I try to score as many as possible in every match. Twenty goals are not easy to achieve.

“We have to give credit to the whole team. My teammates helped me a lot. They deserve a big share of the credit for these goals,” he added.

The current campaign marks the first time Onuachu has reached the 20-goal mark in a league season since his prolific 2021/22 spell with KRC Genk.

With ten matches remaining in the season, the Nigerian forward will be aiming to add to his tally while helping Trabzonspor finish strongly in the league.
