“My husband advised me to keep my maiden name” — Bovi’s wife, Kris Asimonye says

Kris Asimonye, wife of Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma, has shared why she chose not to adopt her husband’s surname after marriage, revealing that the decision was made on his advice.

In a reflective Instagram post, Asimonye disclosed that the conversation took place early in their marriage, although its significance became clearer with time.

Early advice in marriage

According to her, the suggestion came directly from her husband, even though she initially struggled to understand the reasoning behind it.

When I got married, my husband encouraged me not to change my last name. At the time I did not fully understand why,” she wrote.

The couple, who have three children together, agreed on the decision long before public attention focused on the issue of name retention among married women.

Building a personal brand

Asimonye explained that clarity came as she began to establish herself professionally, noting that her maiden name has become central to her identity.

Now, building Kris Asimonye as a brand, I understand completely,” she added.

She suggested that keeping her surname has helped maintain consistency in her professional and personal pursuits, particularly as she continues to grow her public presence.

Public reaction and wider conversation

The revelation has sparked conversations online about marriage, identity and personal choice, with many praising the couple’s mutual understanding and support.

While Asimonye did not disclose further details about the discussion, her comments have added to the growing discourse around women retaining their names after marriage, especially in professional spaces.
