Mourinho says five Benfica stars have self-esteem crisis

Benfica manager José Mourinho has revealed that five of his players are struggling with a “self-esteem crisis,” following his side’s goalless draw against rivals FC Porto in the Portuguese top flight.

The Portuguese tactician admitted that the mental state of some players influenced his decision to adopt a conservative approach against the league leaders.

Mourinho explains tactical approach

Speaking after the match, Mourinho noted that Benfica’s current squad lacks the attacking explosiveness of Porto, forcing him to rely on a more cautious game plan.

“I think Benfica has its characteristics. FC Porto has players with a lot of horsepower, with the ability to attack space. We don’t have that type of player,” Mourinho told reporters. “We had to create danger and not let the game go.”

Confidence issues within the squad

Mourinho went on to acknowledge that morale within the camp is fragile, admitting that several key players are suffering from low confidence.

“Right now, the team is suffering from low confidence. I found three, four, five players with a self-esteem crisis,” he added.

Benfica trail Porto in title race

The 0–0 draw leaves Benfica four points behind Porto, who remain top of the league standings.

Mourinho, however, remains optimistic that his side can rediscover their spark in the coming weeks as they aim to close the gap in the title race.
