Messi headlines Argentina’s 55-man provisional World Cup squad

Lionel Messi has been included in Argentina’s 55-man provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the reigning champions prepare to defend their title in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 38-year-old forward is expected to feature in what could become his sixth World Cup appearance, although he has not yet officially confirmed whether the tournament will mark the final chapter of his international career.

Messi played a major role in Argentina’s qualification campaign, finishing as the top scorer with eight goals across 12 appearances for Argentina national football team.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni also included key attacking players Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez as Argentina begin final preparations for the tournament.

Dybala left out of squad

One notable omission from the provisional list is Paulo Dybala, who has not represented Argentina since 2024 despite being part of the country’s World Cup-winning squad in Qatar four years ago.

Meanwhile, Cristian Romero has been included despite concerns over fitness after missing action since April with a knee injury.

Young talents Alejandro Garnacho and Nico Paz were also selected, alongside uncapped defender Zaid Romero.

Prestianni faces suspension risk

Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni earned a place in the provisional squad but faces the possibility of missing Argentina’s opening matches.

UEFA recently handed the player a six-game suspension, with half of the punishment suspended, following verbal abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior during a Champions League fixture. FIFA later confirmed the sanction would apply globally.

Argentina will open their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16 before facing Austria and Jordan in Group J.
