Married woman dies after violating husband’s tradition from Benue

A Nigerian lady’s warning about understanding a partner’s cultural background before marriage has stirred widespread reactions online after she shared the tragic story of a neighbour who allegedly died after violating a traditional belief.

The lady, who posted on X (formerly Twitter), said the incident involved a married woman whose husband is from Orokam in Benue State.

According to her, the community holds a strong belief tied to a spiritual force known as Alekwu.

She claimed that the woman fell ill after committing adultery, which allegedly violated the cultural rule that married women must remain faithful to their husbands.

Tradition Allegedly Linked to Woman’s Death

In her post, the lady explained that the tradition forbids a married woman from having relations with anyone other than her husband. She said the belief is that Alekwu would punish anyone who breaks that rule.

She wrote, “Before you marry someone, please know their tradition. We just lost a neighbor because of her husband’s tradition.”

According to her, the woman became sick after the alleged violation and the illness was described as incurable.

She further claimed that the neighbour eventually died, attributing the situation to the cultural belief.

She also added that the husband appeared indifferent after the woman’s death.

Social Media Users React

The post quickly drew mixed reactions from social media users, with many sharing their opinions about culture, marriage and personal responsibility.

One user, Temmi, stressed the importance of understanding a partner’s family and beliefs before marriage.

She wrote, “That is why it is very important you know the family you are getting married to, everything is not love not even with someone that really believe in their culture.”

Another user, TheRave, described the story as tragic and warned about the dangers of beliefs that could threaten human life.

TheRave wrote, “That’s a tragic story. If true, it highlights how dangerous it can be when harmful traditions or beliefs override basic human safety and rights. No cultural practice should ever cost someone their life.”

However, some commenters focused on the issue of adultery rather than the tradition itself.

Jobby commented, “If the rule is simply ‘don’t sleep with anyone except your husband,’ that’s literally the basic expectation of marriage everywhere. The real mystery here is why people are debating tradition instead of the adultery.”

Others pointed out that cultural rules in parts of Benue and Kogi states are often taken seriously.

Fresh Boi wrote, “All this benue , kogi Dem no dey play with all those things u most not even argue with ur father or mother, nor a married person cheated nah death straight.”

Another user, Big G, said the situation was sad but questioned the decision to cheat.

He wrote, “But on the other hand why is she cheating? I don’t support the tradition or her death but she obviously, brought it to herself! Too sad.”

Bratva also emphasised the importance of loyalty in marriage, saying, “You should learn about your husband’s tradition abi you should have some self respect and self worth, and have dignity and respect for your husband and your marriage.”
