Manchester United will not reverse decision to release Casemiro despite current form

Manchester United have no plans to reverse their decision to allow veteran midfielder Casemiro to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old Brazilian confirmed in January that he would depart Old Trafford once his current £350,000-a-week deal runs out.

Despite a series of strong performances in recent months, the club have decided not to offer the former Real Madrid star a new contract, meaning he will be available on a free transfer this summer.

Club focused on cost-cutting

United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe had previously raised concerns about Casemiro’s reported £18.2 million annual salary, and the club hierarchy have made reducing costs a priority.

The decision not to activate an extension clause in the midfielder’s contract was taken early as part of a long-term squad rebuild.

Casemiro himself asked for the situation to be clarified publicly to avoid speculation over his future heading into the final months of the campaign.

Carrick praises midfielder’s influence

Since the announcement, Casemiro has delivered several influential displays, including opening the scoring in United’s recent win over Aston Villa with his seventh goal of the season, six of them headers.

The Brazilian celebrated by pointing repeatedly to the club crest in front of the Stretford End, prompting supporters to chant “one more year, Casemiro” both during and after the match.

United interim manager Michael Carrick acknowledged the midfielder’s impact but indicated the club’s position is unlikely to change.

“When something is decided it makes it a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation,” Carrick said.

“The impact he’s had has been terrific, through his influence within the team and with big moments and goals. There was a nice moment at the end with the supporters, he’ll enjoy that one.”
