Man stages own kidnap to extort money from family in Delta State
A Nigerian man has been arrested after allegedly staging his own kidnap in a bid to extort money from his family to fund a planned trip.
He reportedly hired another man to execute the scheme, instructing him to pretend to be Hausa and use a fake accent during the staged abduction.
The incident was reported in a post on X (formerly Twitter), which included a video showing the supposed victim tied up while a voice in the background spoke in a forced Hausa accent.
According to the post, the case was reported in Delta State, prompting activist Harrison Gwamnishu to launch an investigation alongside security operatives.
Their findings revealed that the man had orchestrated the fake kidnap himself, hoping to collect ransom money from his family.
When exposed, the man admitted his role, saying: “I’m sorry, I never meant to. I didn’t know it would lead to this extent. I thought it was just something they’d stage for me, I would travel, then come back and apologize to them.”
The accomplice who faked the accent in the video was also paraded and made to repeat the same statements he used during the staged kidnap.
The revelation has since gone viral, drawing widespread reactions online as many Nigerians took to the comment section to express shock and criticism.
