Man graduates from University 13 years after being accused of using witchcraft to kill father
A man, Asuquo Edet, has graduated from Akwa Ibom State University, 13 years after surviving a brutal attack sparked by accusations of witchcraft.
A journey from tragedy to triumph
The incident occurred in 2014 in Udung Uko Local Government Area, where he was allegedly beaten and left for dead by relatives who blamed him for his father’s illness and eventual death.
He was later rescued by Danish humanitarian Anja Ringgren Lovén and her husband, who provided medical care and support for his recovery and education.
Inspiration and public reaction
His graduation in 2026 has drawn widespread praise, with many describing his story as a symbol of resilience and hope despite adversity.
“I came to Nigeria 13 years ago, and one of the first children we rescued was Asuquo. He had been accused of being a witch and attacked brutally,” Lovén shared, recounting how he was found severely injured but determined to survive.
She added, “From being left for dead in the bush to earning a degree in Genetics and Biotechnology, Asuquo has shown the world what strength and kindness truly mean. He has always been a bright and compassionate young man.”
The development comes years after increased advocacy against harmful witchcraft accusations in parts of Nigeria.
In 2016, similar cases in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States prompted interventions by local authorities and international organisations, leading to campaigns aimed at protecting vulnerable children.
