Mahrez admits Super Eagles outclassed Algeria

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has openly acknowledged that Nigeria were the superior side in their 2-0 victory over the Desert Foxes at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Super Eagles delivered a strong performance at the Marrakesh Stadium to book a place in the semi-finals, ending Algeria’s tournament at the quarter-final stage.

Nigeria assert dominance after the break

Nigeria took firm control after the interval, with Victor Osimhen breaking the deadlock early in the second half through a well-placed header.

Akor Adams doubled the advantage ten minutes later, sealing a deserved win for the three-time African champions.

The result sets up a semi-final showdown between Nigeria and tournament hosts Morocco, with a place in the final on the line. The eventual finalists will face either Egypt or Senegal in the title match.

Mahrez concedes defeat without excuses

Speaking after the game, Mahrez was direct in his assessment, conceding that Algeria had been second best on the day.

“They were better than us,” the former Manchester City winger said. “They deserved to win, to be honest.”

Despite Algeria’s recent success against Nigeria, Mahrez urged his teammates to accept the outcome without excuses.

“In the last three games we beat them, but today they were better. We have to accept it, shake their hands and be honest,” he added.

Super Eagles turn focus to Morocco

Nigeria will now focus on maintaining their form against Morocco as they continue their push for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations glory.
