“Loving the wrong person almost killed me” — Man narrates how wife divorced him after cancer recovery

A man has stirred widespread discussion online after claiming that his wife of 21 years asked for a divorce just two weeks after he completed treatment for cancer.
The account, shared on a relationship forum and reposted across social media platforms this week, detailed how a long-standing marriage reportedly ended shortly after his recovery from a serious illness.
According to the man, the breakdown of the relationship occurred during a period when he was rebuilding his life following months of medical treatment.
He said his wife informed him that she no longer wished to remain in the marriage because she did not want the responsibilities that could come with caring for a partner facing long-term health challenges.
Marriage tested by health crisis
The man described the divorce request as one of the most difficult moments he experienced, coming shortly after overcoming a life-threatening illness.
“My wife asked for a divorce two weeks after I beat cancer. Her exact words were: ‘I didn’t sign up to be someone’s caretaker forever,’” he recounted.
He said the comment left him questioning the strength of a relationship that had lasted more than two decades and had survived numerous personal and family challenges.
Legal preparations before separation
The narrator further disclosed that while undergoing treatment, he quietly reviewed his financial affairs and sought legal advice regarding his future.
“What she didn’t know was that during treatment, I quietly changed my will, separated my finances and documented every asset we owned. So while she was planning her new life, my lawyer was preparing mine,” he stated.
He added that when the divorce was finalised, he felt relief rather than bitterness, believing the experience had revealed uncomfortable truths about the relationship.
Similar debates emerged in 2024 when social media users discussed whether spouses have a moral obligation to remain in marriages during severe health crises.
Those conversations highlighted the emotional, financial and psychological pressures illnesses can place on families.
The latest account has generated mixed reactions online, with many users discussing commitment, caregiving expectations and the responsibilities that accompany long-term marriage during periods of adversity.
