Lookman set for historic Copa del Rey milestone with Atletico

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is on the verge of a historic achievement as Atletico Madrid booked their spot in the 2026 Copa del Rey final, bringing the Nigerian closer to becoming the first of his country to lift the trophy since Emmanuel Amunike in 1997.

Despite a 3-0 loss to Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday night, Atletico advanced 4-3 on aggregate thanks to their dominant 4-0 win in the first leg.

The second leg proved challenging, with the La Liga leaders controlling possession and keeping Lookman pinned in defensive positions for much of the game.

Atletico withstand pressure

Lookman was part of the defensive effort throughout the first half and was substituted in the 58th minute for Nahuel Molina as Atletico adapted to Barcelona’s attacking intensity.

He was indirectly involved in the opening goal, as Lamine Yamal’s cross allowed Marc Bernal to score. Still, Atletico’s disciplined performance in the remaining minutes ensured their passage to the final.

Milestone within reach

After the game, Lookman shared a message on social media: “Next stop: Final.”

Victory in the final would mark a historic moment for the Nigerian attacker, who joined Atletico in January and has quickly become a key figure for Los Colchoneros.

Atletico now await the winner of the second semifinal between Athletic Bilbao and their opponents to determine the final matchup.
