Lookman, Onyedika set for European reunion in Champions League play-off

Two Nigerian internationals will go head-to-head on Wednesday as Ademola Lookman and Raphael Onyedika meet in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off.

Club Brugge host Atlético Madrid at the Jan Breydelstadion in the first leg, with the return fixture scheduled for 24 February in Madrid.

Renewed rivalry

The pair previously faced each other at the same stage last season when Lookman represented Atalanta and Onyedika lined up for Club Brugge.

The Belgian side advanced 5-2 on aggregate before their campaign ended in the quarter-finals against Aston Villa.

Lookman missed the first leg of that tie through injury but scored in the return match. His evening, however, was overshadowed by a missed penalty and a subsequent public disagreement with then-Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

Onyedika featured in both legs and delivered consistent performances in midfield as Club Brugge secured progression.

Fresh chapter in Spain

Now with Atlético Madrid, Lookman enters the contest in strong form. The winger has recorded four goal contributions in four appearances, all of them in the Copa del Rey.

He is yet to register a goal or assist in La Liga but remains an attacking outlet for Diego Simeone’s side in cup competitions.

Onyedika continues to be a regular presence in midfield for Club Brugge and will be tasked with containing Atlético’s forward threats while supporting transitions.
