‘Lookman asked to leave’ – Atalanta boss Palladino confirms

Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino has confirmed that Ademola Lookman requested to leave the club during the January transfer window, with the Nigerian forward completing a move to Atlético Madrid late in the window.
Speaking ahead of Atalanta’s Coppa Italia quarter-final clash against Juventus, Palladino said the decision was driven by the player’s desire for a new challenge, adding that the club respected his wishes.
“Lookman had this offer towards the end of the transfer session, he asked to leave and wanted a change of scenery, so the club made him happy,” Palladino told Sport Mediaset. “We wish him all the best for the future.”
Focus on Coppa Italia clash
Despite the high-profile departure, Palladino stressed that Atalanta remain fully focused on their cup ambitions as they prepare to face Juventus in a single-leg quarter-final, which will go straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes.
“It’s an important match for us, because we care about this competition and want to keep going forward, being competitive to the end,” he said.
The winner will progress to the semi-finals to face either Bologna or Lazio.

Palladino praised Juventus’ recent form and highlighted the challenge his side faces against a rejuvenated opponent.
“This is a fascinating game against a strong team in good shape, who play fine football and have an excellent coach,” he added. “I always prefer to face the strongest opponents.”
Squad changes and depth
Atalanta have reshaped their squad in January, with Giacomo Raspadori arriving as Lookman departed. Palladino believes the current group is well equipped to compete across multiple fronts.
“I am very pleased with the team at my disposal, it is what we needed to face three tournaments,” he said. “I am fortunate to have a strong and competitive squad, with many players of quality and technique.”
The coach also revealed there was little opportunity for a proper farewell with Lookman due to the timing of the transfer.
“We were going to an away match when he left, so there wasn’t much time to say goodbye,” Palladino noted.
Recent setback addressed
Atalanta enter the tie after a dramatic league draw with Como, where they played most of the match with 10 men following Honest Ahanor’s early red card.
“We will not fine Ahanor,” Palladino said. “He is young and aware of his mistake. I liked the reaction of the team, which fought hard to bring home a positive result.”
