Late Olubadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin laid to rest

The city of Ibadan stood still on Friday as the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, was laid to rest in a solemn yet dignified ceremony that drew heartfelt tributes from dignitaries, clerics, and residents alike.
The funeral service, held at the historic Cathedral Church of Saint Peter’s, Aremo, was filled with mourners who came to pay their final respects to a monarch.
Presiding over the service, the Archbishop of Ibadan Province (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, delivered a stirring sermon that captured the essence of the late Oba’s reign and personality.
“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was more than a king; he was a father, a guide, and a beacon of hope for many. His dedication to the welfare of his people and his commitment to justice will forever be remembered,” the cleric said.
Highlighting the late monarch’s deep connection to the Ibadan people, Aladekugbe praised Oba Olakulehin for fostering dialogue, understanding, and cultural pride during a time of social and political transition.
“He was a symbol of unity who ensured that harmony prevailed in a rapidly changing society. His reign was marked by compassion, wisdom, and an inclusive vision that inspired both young and old,” the archbishop added.
The clergyman urged all in attendance to honour the monarch’s memory not only in words but by embodying the values of love, peace, and service that defined his leadership.
Beyond the church walls, the entire city wore a sombre mood as traditional drummers, cultural troupes, and residents dressed in mourning attire filled the streets to witness the final rites of a man who had become an enduring symbol of Ibadan’s royal heritage.
Numerous dignitaries, including political figures, traditional rulers, and community leaders, attended the service and burial, each offering glowing tributes to Oba Olakulehin’s legacy.
As the city bids farewell to its 43rd Olubadan, the memory of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin’s reign, marked by dignity, unity, and an unwavering love for his people, is expected to echo for generations to come.
