LaLiga: Real Madrid edge Alaves to stay within touch of Barcelona

Real Madrid returned to winning ways with a narrow 2-1 victory over Alaves at Mendizorroza, keeping pace with La Liga leaders Barcelona after consecutive defeats.

Kylian Mbappe marked his return to the starting line-up by opening the scoring, cutting inside from the left after collecting a pass from Jude Bellingham and curling a fine finish into the top corner for his 17th league goal of the season.

Despite taking the lead, Real Madrid failed to dominate proceedings and were repeatedly tested by a determined Alaves side.

The hosts were rewarded early in the second half when substitute Carlos Vicente brought the ball down well before firing past Thibaut Courtois.

Although initially ruled out for offside, VAR confirmed Vicente was level with Antonio Rudiger, allowing the goal to stand.

Rodrygo restores advantage

Real Madrid responded quickly, with Rodrygo Goes restoring their lead minutes later.

Vinicius Junior drove into the box and delivered a cutback that Rodrygo converted from close range, scoring for the second consecutive league match.

Madrid hold on for vital points

Jude Bellingham was denied twice late on as the visitors pushed for a third goal, but Xabi Alonso’s side managed the closing stages to secure all three points.

The win lifts Real Madrid back to within four points of Barcelona at the top of La Liga and eases pressure following recent setbacks, though the performance suggested there is still work to be done.
